The Dorset Equine Rescue is looking for a full-time Assistant Barn Manager to join our dedicated team. This is a hands-on position for an experienced, reliable horse professional who is passionate about rescue work and high-quality horse care.
Primary Responsibilities • Mucking • Cleaning/filling water troughs and buckets • Feeding horses • Some heavy lifting (hay, shavings, supplies) • General farm chores and maintaining a clean and organized facility • Blanket changes and horse grooming • Assisting farrier • Supporting daily operations as needed, including hay deliveries, horse emergencies, and other events • Filling the Volunteer Coordinator role during volunteer days
Required Skills & Qualifications • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately • Advanced knowledge of horse care and safe horse handling • Confidence with basic equine first aid, including: • Treating wounds • Hoof abscess care • Taking a horse’s temperature • Applying standing leg wraps • Recognizing signs of illness • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with a team • Minimum 10 years of horse experience • At least two professional equine-related job references • Barn management or assistant barn management experience preferred • College degree preferred • Extremely reliable, self-motivated, and dependable in all weather conditions • Reliable transportation year-round, including winter months • Must reside within a 20-mile radius of Rupert, VT • Possible housing assistance available for the right candidate • Experience driving a 3-horse trailer and operating a tractor • Strong computer skills • Ability to work one weekend day
